Primary Brine
Primary brine, also defined as connate brine in many early geological publications, refers to the type of hypersaline fluid that gets trapped in porous rock formations immediately following the deposition and lithification of marine evaporite or carbonate sequences, with no subsequent mixing with modern surface groundwater or meteoric freshwater. Unlike secondary brine that forms via later-stage water-rock interaction or artificial dissolution of salt deposits, primary brine preserves near-pristine geochemical signatures dating back to the geological period when its host sediments were first deposited, with total dissolved solid (TDS) concentrations usually ranging between 300 g/L and 450 g/L, far higher than the 35 g/L average salinity of modern seawater. Rich in rare strategic elements including lithium, bromine, iodine, strontium and rubidium that are critical for new energy battery manufacturing, pharmaceutical production and aerospace material processing, primary brine has evolved from a previously overlooked byproduct in oil and gas drilling to a core high-value mineral resource in recent decades. Geochemists also rely on the unique hydrogen, oxygen and strontium isotope fingerprints locked in unaltered primary brine to reconstruct paleo-ocean temperature, salinity and atmospheric composition changes that date back over 200 million years, filling critical gaps in the global paleoclimatology research record that cannot be covered by standard fossil or sediment core samples alone.
